What Are Surgical Orthodontics?
Surgical orthodontics includes orthognathic surgery which is often used to correct abnormalities or severe misalignments involving the jaw. Patients who present with these issues may find speaking and eating to be difficult and have pain that impacts all areas of their daily life. With early orthodontic treatment, many of these issues can be addressed before they progress. Waiting too long, however, may result in the need for some more invasive orthodontic treatment.
The most advanced technology for imaging and planning is used to yield the best results, but the overall process can take time. It is not uncommon for treatment to involve braces first in an attempt to reposition the teeth so they will fit beautifully once the jaws are repositioned. Then, surgery to reposition the jaws. And, finally, back to braces treatment to continue to get the teeth positioned just right – making sure the bite is perfectly aligned, too.
If Dr. Klingler believes that you are a candidate for surgical orthodontics, our office will work closely with an oral surgeon. Together we will develop a treatment plan that will include both surgical and orthodontic treatment to bring you relief and have you on your way to a beautiful smile.
Benefits of Surgical Orthodontics
- Achieve optimal bite function
- Incisions can often be made inconspicuously, leaving little – if any – visible scarring.
- Quickly improve oral health
- Heal all deformities of the jaw
Perhaps the best benefit is the ability for it to enhance your life!
Are You a Good Candidate for Surgical Orthodontics?
If you have been told you need jaw surgery in addition to your braces treatment, then you already know you must be a candidate for surgical orthodontics. Otherwise, you may be a candidate if your jaws do not align or fit well together. This will impact both your bite and your smile.
Those who are looking for facial aesthetics due to misaligned jaws or who have significant discomfort caused by TMJ disorders may also be a candidate.
Although every patient has a particular set of needs, generally speaking, surgical orthodontics can include procedures such as:
- Osteotomy (bone cutting)
- Bone grafts
- Distraction osteogenesis (stretching of the bone)
- Orthodontic care
